Abure re-elected as LP national chairman

Julius Abure has secured his re-election as the National Chairman of the Labour Party for a second term, with unanimous support from delegates, Channels TV reports.

The Chairman of the National Convention and Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr Ikechukwu Emetu, announced the winner at the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday.

Abure has been engaged in a conflict with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, headed by Joe Ajaero.

Last Wednesday, the conflict over party control escalated as union members, following the NLC leadership’s instructions, picketed LP secretariats nationwide.

The protesters had surrounded the LP national headquarters in Abuja, singing songs of solidarity and calling for Abure’s resignation.

The NLC sent a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting that they refrain from providing any support to the National Convention of the Labour Party.

The leadership of the Labour Party said it was going to proceed with the national convention as scheduled, but the location of the convention was shifted from Umuahia in Abia State to Nnewi in Anambra.

A former President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, speaking last Thursday during an interview on the Channels Television programme, Politics Today, said that the Labour Party is owned by the NLC.

He stated that the party was formed by the union as a platform for members to exercise and defend their rights.
