The lawmakers, led by its factional Speaker, Right Honourable Martin Amaewhule, announced the defection in a letter addressed to the state acting Chairman of PDP and signed by the 26 lawmakers.

The letter which was read at the floor of the house cited the division at the national leadership of the party as the reason behind their move.

You may recall that the Rivers State House of Assembly had since October 30, fallen into crisis after the same Pro-Wike lawmakers attempted to impeach the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

Implications on Political Landscape

This large-scale defection could potentially have far-reaching implications for the political landscape in Rivers State. The shift not only speaks to the internal divisions within the PDP but also indicates a potential change in the balance of power. The defection may be indicative of a larger trend, with rumors suggesting that Nyesom Wike himself may soon defect to the APC.

The post-defection dynamics within the Rivers State House of Assembly will be closely watched. As these 26 lawmakers were known to be loyal to Wike, their move could influence the future direction of the Assembly and the broader political environment in Rivers State. The days ahead will indeed determine who blinks first in this developing political whirlwind.
