Zainab, a former president of the court of appeal, was the first female to hold the position.

She presided over the 2007 Sokoto state governorship election petition tribunal and the suit in which Timipre Sylva, former governor of Bayelsa, challenged the nomination of Seriake Dickson, an ex-governor of the state, as the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking at the senate valedictory session on Saturday, Bulkachuwa said he often influenced his wife’s decisions while she was in office.

“Particularly, my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while she was in office,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker said.

“And she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues.”

Ahmad Lawan, outgoing senate president who presided over the valedictory session, interrupted the senator before he spoke any further.

“Distinguished, I don’t think this is a good idea going this direction,” Lawan said.

Sen Bulkachuwa’s statement monumental disgrace, he should be arrested immediately – Agbakoba tells Tinubu

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olisa Agbakoba, has described Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa’s statement at the Valedictory of the 9th Senate as a monumental disgrace for the country’s institutions.

The current senator representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, emerged online in which he was seen bragging about how he influenced the decision of his wife, Zainab Bulkachuwa, a retired Justice of the Appeal Court.

Bulkachuwa bowed out of the bench after clocking the statutory retirement age of 70 years for justices of the Appeal Court in 2020.

The statement was reportedly made during the valedictory session of the 9th Senate.

Reacting to the developments, Agbakoba, in a statement on Tuesday, said Bulkachuwa deserved to be taken up immediately by the authorities.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu to cleanse the system in a most dramatic and fundamental process if he wished to succeed.

The statement read, “Senator Bulkachuwa’s statement at the Valedictory of the 9th Senate is a monumental disgrace for our institutions. This man deserves to be taken up immediately by the authorities. It is a blight on my confidence in our systems.

“I represented Usman Tuggar in relation to disputed elections between him and Senator Bulkachuwa for Bauchi North senatorial. We lost in 3 courts. Senator Bulkachuwa seems to suggest why. It remains for President Tinubu to cleanse the system in a most dramatic and fundamental process if he wishes to succeed.

“The chairman of NDIC has also made dramatic revelations pointing to possible deep rot in our systems of Government responsible for financial and monetary policy. The president ought to act now!!”
