Katsina State Government has declared state of emergency on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and launch campaign against open defecations.
The state Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari at the launching ceremony held at the government house Katsina directed that roaap on open defecations, Water Sanitation and Hygiene investment plan be made while relevant Ministry, Department at Agencies should launch sector reform by adoption of the state level action plan.
He said the state steering committee would take part in accessing National WASH funds from the Federal Ministry of Water resources.
Governor Bello Masari identified water supply as among the five key sector of the restoration agenda of his administration. stressing that, short medium and long term plans would be adopted to address Water supply and Sanitation problem in the state.
According to him umder the short term government had replaced the high lift pumps at Ajiwa water works which assisted greatly in pumping treated water to consumers from the water works to the state capital Katsina.
This he said was in addition to repairs and replacement of absolute pumps at Funtua and Malumfashi water works as well as replacement of submersible pumps and generating sets at Daura water supply scheme.
Governor Masari said during the period of his first tenure in office Sable water works in Maiadua local government was commissioned along with Semi - urban water scheme at Dutsi and Mashi local governments all in an effort to increase access to safe drinking water.
He explained that, under the Medium and long term plans the state government had completed the rehabilitation and expansion of water works across the state.
" Ajiwa water works has undergone total rehabilitation with additional Pump house to argument the existing one while Malumfashi water works had been redesigned with the Dam been expanded and new treatment plant would be constructed to increase access to potable water to members of the surrounding communities,"Governor Masari said.
He said the government is providing diesel to all the water works and some selected Semi urban schemes as steps to ensure sustainable water supply.
He emphasized that, Katsina state government in collaboration with development partners had donated over 3,500 hand pumps boreholes along with 100 Solar powered boreholes and over 450 Pit - latrines constructed at various communities, Schools, Health institutions and Market places across the rural areas of the state.
On the area of Sanitation and Hygiene, Alhaji Aminu Masari said over 3000 Communities across the 26 local governments selected have benefited from the program. pointing out that,Katsina has the largest number of communities in Nigeria.
He lauded the efforts of the development partners particularly the UNICEF for its support at various institutions at the state and local government levels through capacity building and logistics.assuring that, the Zobe Dam project in Dutsinma would be completed in December this year to increase water supply in Katsina Metropolis and its environs.
