The Director – General, National Identity Management commission, Engineer Aliyu Aziz has said that the current security challenges in Nigeria have caused problem sto the peaceful coexistence of the people.
He stated this in the lectures on Data management and National security in Nigeria during the exercise , Haske Biyu 2019 in Armed Forces command and Staff college in Jaji Kaduna.
He added that these challenges have affected processes of governance across different levels of government at both state and federal strata, saying that collaboration is required among securities agencies in order to effectively fight the diverse forms of criminality that have eluded peaceful coexistence in the country.
He also said that if is necessary that collaborative efforts leverage on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) platform for better organization, timely information, and faster action through data management.
The Director – General explained that data management enables data sharing and across referencing that would provide insights for quicker action which will in turn enhance national security, pointing out that the importance of effective data management cannot be over emphasized for collation of actionable information to aid decision making and with data management, the identity of any individual could be authenticated and verified anytime and anywhere in the world.
Engineer Aziz further said that the national Identity Number (NIN) was introduced by NIMC as a unique number issued to all individuals upon successful enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB), adding that it is a verifiable number that allows for smooth operation and ensures that security agencies have the requisitive data of individuals.
He said that it is in this regard that the NIMC works in collaboration with the Nigeria Immigration Service to ensure that anyone who presents himself or herself for enrolment is indeed a Nigerian or legal resident.
