The Nigerian government has promised to persecute all those found to be responsible for the failure of the former Skye bank.
Minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed said this on Friday while on a visit to the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), in Abuja.
In a statement signed by Hassan Dodo director of information at the finance ministry, the minister directed the managing director of NDIC Umaru Ibrahim to ensure that a thorough investigation is instituted into the failure of Skye bank, adding that at the end of the investigations, all those found culpable in the failure of the bank would be prosecuted.
The government said it has to show some examples and the Skye bank case is a good one to start with as it cannot just be bailing out banks and leaving perpetrators of the failure of the banks to go scot-free. Zainab added that when government intervenes by protecting depositors, the intervention is limited
Ahmed harped on the need for the NDIC to continuously monitor the banks to ensure that problems are detected early and solved before they become crises.
Within this week, the federal government received the sum of n15billion and this brings to about N107billion what the NDIC has paid to date.
