The Imo State Government, yesterday, disclosed that it has converted two primary schools in Owerri, the state capital, to market as part of its ongoing urban renewal programme.
Chairman, Imo State Bureau for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning, Engr. Kingsley Uju, who disclosed this to journalists at the state government House, Owerri, after a meeting with the non-formal sector comprising traders, auto mechanics, fabricators and artisans, gave the names of the schools to include Sam Njemanze Primary School and Waterside Primary School, Royce Road all in Owerri.
According to Uju, who doubles as the Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) to the governor, the schools, which had been relocated to Old Stadium on Tetlow Road, would be converted to markets as free zones, where food stuffs and food would be sold to accommodate a number of those displaced from Ekeukwu Market.
He explained that already, the government had started installing solar lights, so that trading could go on round the clock. Uju, who expressed happiness that the government was quickly and positively recovering Owerri city, used the opportunity to warn all traders, artisans and mechanics still operating within 10 kilometer radius of Owerri, to relocate to the places provided for them or be moved by force within 16 days. He added: “Our machines and earth moving equipment are on the streets already.
This is an operation that has lasted for three years. The last operation took place one year ago and because of the pleas of the traders for time, we relaxed a bit. But we can’t continue to wait anymore.

As you can see, the operation has started again last week. We are intensively working along Douglas Road, Rotibi, Ekeonunwa, Tetlow, Nworie Lane, Ihugba, Mbaise Road, School Road, Royce Road and Christ Church Road. We are doing total recovery of Owerri city. The same thing is ongoing at Wetheral Road and Douglas Road. These roads will be the best roads in Owerri in the next two months.”
