National Open University offers admission to prisoners

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has offered admission to not less than 430 prisoners all over the country.

The objective of the admissions is to promote the educational development of the convicts.

Mr. Francis Enebore, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), disclosed at a news briefing recently that the admissions to prison inmates were facilitated by National Stakeholders on Prison Reforms.

“In the education sector, I am pleased to announce that 430 of our prisoners are running various degree courses at NOUN,” the NPS image maker stressed.

He pointed out that the new prison reform package permits prisoners to access university education in order to make life out of prison worth living for them.

Enebore said three other prisoners will soon complete their doctorate degree courses in other universities in the country.

According to him, allowing prisoners the benefit of university education is in tandem with the new reforms being implemented by the federal government of Nigeria.  The reform is aiming at making life after prison more meaning, he reiterated.
